We’re as giddy as a gaggle of knock-kneed schoolgirls.  Ryan Adams sent us a Valentine.  A big, greasy, pepperoni-spackled Valentine. And we’re pretty certain it's love.

The 7-song EP Extra Cheese (dedicated to us, obviously) is available at iTunes for $3.99, but even at this bargain basement price point, it's a dubious deal.  The first six tracks—"Two," "Blossom," "Answering Bell," "Evergreen," "My Love for You Is Real," and "Desire"—have seen previous release; the final track, "Hey There Mrs. Lovely," is lifted off the needlessly ballyhooed Destroyer sessions (2000).  (Jesus, Ryan, if you had to pull something off that boot, why not the complete version of Gillian Welch’s "Revelator," to replace the truncated fade-out that everyone seems to have?)

We’re not even sure what this EP is supposed to be.  A gag collection of greatest hits?  A half-assed medley of half-hearted love songs?  Pitchfork’s Stephen M. Deusner thinks he’s found a formal organizational premise:  "As Extra Cheese proceeds," Duesner writes, "Adams strips away the instruments until only he, an acoustic guitar, and a harmonica remain."   Sounds reasonable enough, but a cursory listen debunks that theory.  (We’ve suspected for some time now that there’s something wrong with people’s ears over at pitchfork.com.)  If anything can be said about the tracking, it’s this:  whoever put the EP together didn’t even take the time to properly sequence the disc.  A dynamically challenged "Answering Bell" is uncomfortably tucked between "Blossom" and "Evergreen," and it sounds like sh*t.

We decided we could do better.  In keeping with the spirit of the EP, we’ve mixed in a few hits, added a handful of unaccountable cuts, and topped it all off with a liberal squirt of cheeze.  And since we go the extra mile here at cheezeball.net, we’ve transformed the EP into an LP.

Now there’s a mix that doesn’t suck.  Your thoughts? (Sure, it leans a little heavily on Heartbreaker.  And, yeah, we probably shouldn’t have included "Wonderwall," but what the hell.)  One more note:  the "Beautiful Sorta" edit, if you’re wondering, is just the first 10 seconds of the track.  We can do without the song, but the intro ("When I say 'love,' you better believe me L-U-V.  Gimme a beer.") cracks us up.   And hell, if that’s not romantic . . .
